Automated Chemistry AnalyzerMost accurate results are acquired when blood is drawn into a completely filled gel separator tube, and centrifuged as soon as possible after draw to separate the serum/plasma from the red cells. Specimens are stable for several hours if refrigerated immediately and exposure to ambient air is minimized at all times until test is run. Hemolysis may falsely decrease CO2 levels.

The presence of clots or clot fragments in the sample is an indication of improper blood collection. Hemolyzed plasma is an indication of improper sampling, unless the patient has a hemolytic disease process. Samples should be redrawn for valid results
Plasma should be separated if submission to the Clinical Pathology lab is not possible within an hour of sampling.
Plasma separation instructions:
Centrifugation for 10-15 minutes at high speed (4500 RPM is recommended).
The separated plasma should be placed in a plastic tube after centrifugation. Plasma should be removed without disturbance of the buffy coat using a plastic (not glass) pipette and transferred to an additive?free plastic tube.
This secondary tube should be clearly labelled as containing citrated plasma to avoid inadvertent confusion with other sample types (e.g., serum, EDTA).
If submission to the Clinical Pathology lab within six hours is possible, plasma may be refrigerated up to 6 hours and submitted on wet ice. If testing will be delayed longer than six hours, freeze the plasma sample and sent on dry ice overnight by Fed Ex. The plasma should be frozen upon receiving.
